Rescuers in anguish hoped to find trapped miners by drilling a third hole and proceeding from that point, authorities reported at the scene. Rescue authorities have already drilled two holes to reach the miners in the collapsed Crandall Canyon mine, but were having trouble reaching their colleagues because of several seismic anomalies.

The nightmare has gone on for several days and nights, with virtually no end in sight. Rescuers are no longer making any prognostications as to when the tunnel might reach the miners, because every time workers make any progress through the tunnel, a collapse appears imminent and progress must cease.

A camera and microphone were lowered down into an underground cavern where the miners were thought to be located, but no stirring of any kind was heard or perceived on camera, just murky shadows. Rescue workers are making a third attempt to drill down to reach the miners, and are still hopeful.
