ConAgra foods widened their recall of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter by one year as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration works to investigate a recent salmonella outbreak amongst consumers.

The recall was extended back to October 2004 from December 2005, the FDA said in an advisory posted on its website. Food regulators said consumers who have purchased and Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter that begins with a 2111 product code, including toppings, should immediately discard them. The product code can be found under the lid on both brands.

ConAgra announced a recall mid-February, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked 288 cases of foodborne illnesses in 39 states to the consumption of Peter Pan. Great Value made at this plant may also be contaminated.

At the start of the FDA warning, no deaths had been reported. Last Friday, two personal injury lawsuits were filed against ConAgra on behalf of the daughter of a woman whom allegedly died from salmonella poisoning from tainted Peter Pan peanut butter.

The lawsuit, alleges ConAgra was negligent and contributed to the peanut butter contamination.
