Boy Hit in Crosswalk is Improving– Driver Cited for DUI

As a follow-up to my last blog relating to an allegedly impaired driver hitting a family in a crosswalk near a school, we are happy to report that the 4-year-old boy who initially was in critical condition has recently been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Although apparently not texting, the driver, nevertheless was impaired, as originally suspected. The Tribune noted that the driver, Cody Ray McCormick, was driving with two children in the back seat, and was driving under the influence of either alcohol or prescription drugs, based on West Jordan police statements. He was also driving on a suspended or revoked license.

This incident again emphasizes the growing problem of impaired drivers and the need for increased vigilence of the public and police in keeping these unsafe drivers off the road.

It also underscores the need for everyone to review the limits of liability insurance, and, as probably is the case with this driver, the need for increased limits for uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. With the downturn in the economy, there are increasing numbers of uninsured or underinsured drivers. We all owe it to ourselves and loved ones to protect ourselves from insufficient insurance limits that are becoming more and more prevalent as people chose to carry low limits, or no coverage at all for their motor vehicles.
