EnergySolutions To Bring 20,000 Tons Nuclear Waste To Utah

Comments Off

EnergySolutions applied to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to bring 20,000 tons of nuclear waste to Utah. This enormous amount of waste would come from Italy and could make Utah the worlds dump site.

Before approving the license, the NRC must publish a notice in the Federal Register and allow comments from the public and affected government entities. The notice has not yet been published. Earlier this month, EnergySolutions went public, raising nearly $700 million in its initial public offering.

Utah lawmakers are already questioning the EnergySolutions Inc. bid to import 20,000 tons of radioactively contaminated material from Italy.

“That’s a lot of waste,” said Arjun Makhijani, executive director of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, a nuclear-watchdog group. “As far as I know, it’s unprecedented for such a large amount to come to this country for disposal.”
