Police Suspect Street Racing in Accident that Critically Injured Two

Comments Off

Police now think that an accident that occurred last Thursday night in Big Cottonwood Canyon involved street racing. The driver of a Lotus lost control on a curve, overcorrected and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. The Lotus hit a BMW SUV coming down the canyon and then came to a rest.

The speed limit in that area of the canyon is 40 mile per hour, but witnesses said that the Lotus appeared to racing a Porsche up the canyon and that the drivers were competing with each other. Rescue crews had to cut the Lotus apart to extricate driver Marc Buterbaugh, 45, and his 13-year-old son. Both were critically injured and were transported to Intermountain Medical Center.

Fortunately, the two in BMW were not seriously injured and were treated at the scene. The driver of the Porsche continued up the canyon after the accident but investigators are not sure if he saw the accident. He returned to the accident at approximately 11:00 p.m. and told police that he was not racing. Police are still investigating and considering charges.
