High Speed Crash on I-80 Seriously Injures Two

Comments Off

At about 11:00 p.m. last night, a 19-year-old young man driving a BMW at a high rate speed on I-80 in Parleys Canyon lost control and rolled the car down an 80 foot embankment and through some trees before it came to rest in chest high water. Rescue crews had to cut the roof off the vehicle to extricate the driver who is currently listed in fair condition at Intermountain Medical Center, while his 16-year-old female passenger remains in critical condition at University Hospital.

One commentator on the risk of high(er) speeds issue, a theoretical physicist named Alex Kuznetsov, has authored A mathematical analysis of "speed kills" arguments and concluded that while speed is a risk factor, there are other more significant risk factors in the typical traffic scenario. Even if you accept his conclusions, however, common sense dictates that you should always drive at speeds that are safe for the conditions.
